I finished my new tank about a month ago, but am not thrilled with my scape.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

In the spirit of being helpful, not judgey and mean.....As is, when I look at it I see three rock piles in a row. I see a nice cave to the right side, but not too much other than a pile in the center and left. All 3 piles sort of look like they run near the back wall, but maybe more or less in a straight line.

What about moving the middle pile towards the front of the tank, which gets rid of the 3 in a row look. If you have any long flat pieces maybe you could make a bridge to the middle pile from the left side? Something like that. Maybe add in a little more height to one of the side piles, to get rid of the 2 larger piles looking essentially the same.

Here is a picture I like to keep in mind that illustrates the rule of 1/3's and composition. I think it helps me visualize the layout a little better.

Just ideas, I am by no means an expert. I like the overall look of the tank, how long is it? Looks like a 7 or 8 footer in the pics!

Plus one on the scape! I actually teach that design stuff, it's very old school but rings true. Asymmetrical balance, variety... are two words that come to mind.

The three piles idea is a good one. Your stand is cool too... where is the equipment? I'd love to hear more about the system.

Thanks everyone. I've ben looking through the thread on r2r for a few days. Tons of info, ideas and opinions there. Thoughts I'd throw it out to a smaller group and see.

It's a 96x30x24 with all equipment is in the basement.

Funny part on the first comment, the center pile is about 6" closer to the front than the other two. The length of the tank is playing visual tricks on the front to back depth.

I started to think that's what I was seeing in the second photo you posted. I was thinking right up close to the front glass, or just close enough to get a scrapper or mag-float by for cleaning.

If you're looking for more information, search the interwebs for "aesthetics of aquascaping". There's a three part series. It covers a lot of the topics already mentioned but also goes into coral placement to maximize color.

Good luck! Aquascaping has to be the hardest part of he build for me.

Read through a bunch of threads, and the aesthetics of aquascaping recommendation.

Here's attempt 1, going to keep tweaking.

The piles are fine. Your fish will love your for them.

The idea is to cover every inch of rock with colonies and stuff so that you cannot see the rocks anymore. People who sweat their rocks too much are not thinking about the future. Take a look at some of the TOTMs and spend a minute to even try and figure out where the rocks are below the corals.

Thanks. I'm liking the 2 island look better as well. The open space in the middle is giving the fish an area to School together a bit.

Might try to tweak the big monti to angle down a bit for better viewing.

Looks much better. Now grow some big colonies on it ;) the corals will fill in the details

Haha, Yeah, working on it. The only bad part about upgrading to a tank this size is my larger corals now look like frags...

I think you need some shevles in there, maybe some real reef rock shelves? One big thing about aquascaping is that you are happy with it! looking at it everyday is tough if you don't like what you are seeing. If you like it, its good!
