Awesome progress!

I’m curious, did you add a ceiling vent fan to the filtration room? I only ask because I ended up adding a second to my room which I control via Apex. It acts like a chiller for my tank. Temp goes to high, the fan kicks on and pulls cooler air from my living space through the hood into the filtration room. (filtration room hovers at 77 deg living space 68 deg). I’ve been able to easily maintain tank temps with 4x MH and a ton of T5.

Even if you didn’t want to go that route, a vent fan is still a nice perk to evacuate humidity if you have the opportunity before drywall goes up. Plus, I believe it’s building code if there’s a washing machine in the space. Not that we’re going to turn you in to the authorities....

Also, love that you ran direct Ethernet for the Apex. You might consider running a few spare CAT5/6 before you close in the space. It’s easy now. Or a “smurf tube” to be able to fish wires later. I’m a tech geek always playing around with wires.

I did not add a ceiling vent fan to fish room. But I can always add it and it sounds like a good idea.

The plan is to finish the basement and get final inspection done before the tank is up and running. Because I think a lot of "codes" might be broken to have the setup I am looking for. Especially with water and drainage... They do not know I am adding a washing machine. I hope you don't turn me in haha There will be a few things inspections may not like.

I actually did run another CAT5 to the family room. with thoughts of using that for direct connection or adding a second modem. By smurf tube do you mean something like this:

I am glad we are not the only geeky people on there. We made this with left over pipe. We are ran wire fishing lines in the ceilings.

I had to chuckle about outsourcing drywall. A friend of the family once asked me if I could do drywall work.

Me: “No”

My wife: “Yes you can, you did a great job fixing our last home.”

Me: “Yes, I know how to. No, I don’t do drywall work.“ “Thanks wife...”


Smurf tube seems to be just a nickname or trade name for flexible PVC pipe you use so that you can easily fish low voltage lines later on. I’ve used ABS, sch40 PVC, anything I had on hand. It all works. It’s just hard if you have a hard bend to fish lines later (learned from that mistake) which makes a flexible tube ideal if you have bends. Looks like you’ve got it taken care of.

I’m not sure if the vent fan is a local code requirement for where I live or a standard statewide thing. Hope all goes well with the inspections. I’ve had good luck with inspectors in Jefferson.

I feel the same way. I know how to do it, but I don't do drywall work.

I used extra ABS and PVC for our lines. Should work nicely. Minimized all the bends/

I have a good luck so far with the inspections and should be good to go. Our plan is to have it completed before the tank gets here at the end of March. Then go back to construction and plumbing to add all the fish requirements, without having to do inspections.

Vent fan is part of the 2015 international building code. So if you live in Colorado in any populated area it applies. Weld county is one of the places this doesnt apply.

I would definitely add the vent fan to the room. Make sure you get one large enough for the space and look at the scone level so you don't get one that sounds like a jet taking off.

Tanks builds that start with a basement finish, or any significant DIY home renovation, are near and dear to me. Love it. Great progress and planning. I'm also voting for a good ventilation fan.

Have you considered one of the auto fleece rollers?

Thank you! I haven't really considered a auto fleece roller. I am assuming you mean instead of filter socks. The reloads on that thing would be an expensive long term cost with more maintenance, but as this hobby goes wait a few months and could totally change my mind!
