Aqaurist/Zookeeper Position open at the Butterfly Pavilion

Position Summary: The primary role of this position is to act as the lead aquarist for the Butterfly Pavilion’s Water’s Edge (WE) Exhibit. The aquarist will oversee the daily care, maintenance, and development of 7 aquariums within the WE exhibit. He/She will also provide specialized care for the BP’s marine invertebrates. The secondary role of this position is to act as a curatorial zookeeper, providing care for all exhibitory and non-exhibitory animals at the Butterfly Pavilion. The aquarist/zookeeper will also rotate with other zookeepers at all exhibit stations presenting animals and teaching visitors about the animals and conservation.

Reports to: Curatorial Manager (Science and Conservation Branch)

Qualifications: Possesses or is working toward a Degree in Biology, Marine Science, or a related biological field of study. A minimum of one year of experience working within a public aquarium or related facility is desired.

Experience: Previous experience setting up and maintaining large (up to 500 gallons) aquariums. Strong husbandry skills and experience working with a variety of marine invertebrates (including corals) are required. Vertebrate and non-aquatic invertebrate animal husbandry experience is preferred.

Position is hourly and part-time (32 hours/week). Must be able to work early mornings (beginning at 6:30AM)


Responsibilities:

Aquarist Responsibilities (Primary Role)
· Provide daily care and preventative maintenance for Water’s Edge aquariums, including cleaning of aquariums, upkeep of life support systems, maintaining water quality, reserve tanks and work spaces, and troubleshooting mechanical, lighting, minor electrical, and plumbing issues.
· Provide daily husbandry for the Water’s Edge animals and monitor their health.
· Inventory and keep records of Water’s Edge supplies, daily husbandry, maintenance actions, and animal health.
· Collaborate with Curatorial Department in investigating new animals, exhibit designs and maintenance plans for WE.
· Communicate daily with the other members of the WE team.

Zookeeper Responsibilities (Secondary Role)
· Provide husbandry for non-aquatic invertebrates (e.g., tarantulas, butterflies, stick insects, scorpions, etc.) on exhibit and behind the scenes.
· Staff public contact positions in all exhibit areas.
· Answers questions from the public and be a source of invertebrate knowledge and some identification.
