So now that I have my fancy new DSLR camera the famdamily wants to take some outdoor portraits. Any suggestions are very welcome. This will be a first time for me so I am doing some research. Here are a couple of articles I found (btw I love this site, lot of good info for us newbies):

So I am thinking of either going to Red Rocks or I was given the suggestion to go to chautauqua. I was told its best to shoot close to dusk or dawn so i was planning on heading out in the afternoon, probably around 6-7pm. I guess around 1 hour before sunset is the "golden time".

I also was told "F8-F11 Good focal length for groups - lower F for single individual"
and
"For locations, try to find a spot with a simple, uncluttered background. It is best if you can find a location that has some type of structure on one side to block the light from that side, thereby forcing in light from the other side. This will give a direction of light, so your pictures will not be flat. Creating good directional light outdoors is usually what separates amatures from professionals."

I should also bring a grey card for white balance... All I have is my 18-55 lens so any suggestions on aperture, ISO, shutter speed etc would greatly be appreciated, along with any other tips.

Thanks!
Kris

I can't say anything about the settings but we had our family pictures taken at Daniels Park. It's a pretty nice place.
