In my experience I have only seen these survive/thrive in mature reef tanks. They are very sensitive to changes in any of the core tank parameters (temp, salinity, ph, alk, etc.). They also seem to feed on the type of stuff only a well established tank has growing on live rock.
I have seen many already wasting away in LFS tanks. This seems to be true of all the fromia and linkia stars. Again, just my observations - maybe someone will chime in with their success stories.

I have had good luck with fromia starfish and serpant stars. I have not had good luck with linkias

But I think the main key to starfish, is having a heavy bioload heavy export system so there is plenty of food for the starfish.

yeah I am unsure why it died but I do know that It made contact with air so I am going to assume that was the issue and give another one a try , I have done good with starfish until the come in contact with the air. usually after I move a tank or do a water change
