Some know and some don't, but I am a BBQ catering chef. I am also a volunteer with a disaster relief organization called Operation BBQ Relief. I have cooked for this organization when we had the floods here in Colorado. We provided 21,000 meals in 7 days. OBR has served over a million meals in the last 6 years for those in need. They are now on scene in Houston Texas. I implore each and every member to donate what you can. Each dollar donated is a big hot meal of comfort food to those in need and the first responders in the area. They are expecting to serve several hundred thousand meals in the coming weeks and need our support. Please if you can, make a donation. Even 5 bucks helps 5 people eat a good meal. Think of it this way. The cost of one frag could feed a family for several days.

Just donated... mostly because I am from Kansas City (and have competed) and after eating all of the sewage that people call BBQ in this area, I will support anybody who is into BBQ. ...and the cause is a pretty good one. :)

If you end up going to Texas, bring me back some Pecan Logs.

Well done for volunteering.

I wish I could get there for this deployment. Just cannot swing it this time, so I do my best to help them from here. Many that are there are cooks I have competed with as well.

I will let you know the next time I see a load of Pecan come through. A buddy of mine trucks down a few cords every now and then.

If you want good BBQ around here in a restaurant setting, then you need to go to GQue BBQ in Broomfield (120th and Sheridan) He is a former competitor, and has in just over a year of operation been listed in the top 30 BBQ joints in the country.

Hey I'm interested in donating my time. I saw the registration info on the website. Do I have to cover all of my expenses for travel and lodging if I am mobilized? feel free to PM me if there are alot of details

Yes.. this is completely volunteer. They do not pay for anything. This is how they can feed for a buck per meal. If you get a deployment letter, you can talk to the guys and see if there is sleeping arrangements. Many times they have trailers and campers that are shared. I took a cot and a sleeping bag on my deployment and slept under a tent. Tell you the truth I didn't sleep more than a few hours a day for the week I did it. Food while I was there was not a problem, but I cannot say for this deployment. Better off asking the deployment contacts. With all that said, working with this group was one of the best things I ever did. Have life long friends from it.

Thanks for the info. I put my name in with them and about 3 different orgs but most are inundated with interest right now.

Depending on your income level, volunteer miles and expenses might be completely tax deductible... so you get to help and save a bit of money for the good deed. Plan on sleeping in your car or a tent - hotels are hard to come by in an area like this...

The personal capital that you can get from working with other volunteers can be huge. These people might think of you some day for an opportunity that you might not have had otherwise. There are all kinds of cool stories of good karma coming back around...

I've got a hundred places to stay if they are accessible and close to operations. Just need an organization to avoid the problems associated with self-deployment, plus they handle logistics..
