Best way to plumb a drain on a rubbermaid

Thinking something like this. Any better ideas? This will drain into my sump, so think of the Rubbermaid as the display tank :)

I was going to cut slots into it and extend it above the waterline, to prevent any critters from riding down to the sump.

They have the PVC drain thingies that open wider at the top. It'd work perfectly with slots and give a larger area for the water to flow thru so less splashing sound. Sorry I don't know the name. They are easy to find at ace hardware.
