I don’t think I’ll be able to participate this time around due to my duties as a college student and all the shuffling around into new houses I’ll be doing, but out of curiousity for a future contest, do you have to attend Reef Ed to be in? I don’t get a chance to attend a lot of these events due to school or work and wonder if that’ll disqualify contenstants?

No, attendance to Reef ED is not required. Although the winner will be asked to attend next year, so they can present, and discuss their methods

I'll be tossing my hat into the ring at the start of March. Don't know why I haven't jumped on this earlier, I've got a whole comprehensive build list of stuff for my first tank, so why not?

And first round of questions...

1) QT tank(s) and treatments for livestock, add cost or not? Tank additives and dosing I can understand as a yes but a little grey in this area.
2) If we purchase equipment from forum members, would their voucher of price paid count?
3) Shipping and taxes added, too?
4) Do sale prices count? I picked up a 29 gallon during Petco's Dollar per Gallon sale back in the start of February.

Yes, on sales prices. Yes, on anything that is repeatable. If you paid $5 for an apex with all of the works from another member, then this is probably no bueno since nobody else would be able to do this.

I am adding in shipping and taxes.

The goal is to represent a true-cost kind of deal for people who are looking for a blueprint to make their tank better or get into the hobby.

For my tank, I think that it could be repeatable if you went to a few LFS chose stuff from their used section and ordered a few more things online or off of craigslist.

1) No I don't think qt will count toward the budget cost. While be it I think I could setup a qt for less then a 100, I would rather not have anyone taking unnecessary risks here.
2) Yep that works fine. If you bought it used, then you bought it used. Charge what you pay for it. If however you got it for free, then you should charge your self a reasonable used price for it.
3) yes shipping and taxes are ultimately part of the purchase price, so if you paid it, then you should charge yourself for it.
4) Sale prices are fine too. Again, if that's what you paid for it, then that is what you should charge yourself for it.
