Age old question... Are these true percula or ocelaris clowns..

Count their dorsal spines. I believe its 9 percula 10 ocellaris.

Tried on the second to last pic but it's tough to say if it's 9 or 10! Lol

Looks like it's tough to make the distinction. Maybe the trick in the last paragraph of p. 68 will work?

The difference between Percula's and Ocellaris can be difficult. They can even cross bred and add even more to the confusion! I would imagine that many just maybe hybrids in today's market. Percula's have 9 or 10 dorsal spines and Ocellaris will have 10 or 11 just to add more to the confusion. Percula's black outline is more defined than Ocellaris and the eye on Percula's generally has more orange and Ocellaris has more black. I believe these look more like Percula's than Ocellaris. But again maybe hybrids! :smile:

stupid question...

what's the main difference between the two? My guesstimate is that Percs get dark/black on top as they mature, and ocellaris don't, but I don't *know* that for sure.
