Hey guys...
Been trying to noodle out some solutions to making some custom parts for my new build, and was looking at "Cast Acrlyic"

Some short reading on the process tells me that "Cast Acrylic" is kind of a misnomer because the casing resin is actually clear polyurethane, polyester?

Has anyone used cast poly for parts or ornaments? Is it reef safe?

Any guidance much appreciated!

Thanks!
Dave

Call Colorado plastic products and ask for Charles. They can answer any question you have and Charles does reef tanks so he would know! 303-443-9271

Dave:

"Cast" Acrylic actually refers to the solid forming process. Acrylic is typically formed through either extrusion or cast. For extrusion, there is a "2D" mold, so if you are making a clear tube, there is a circle border cut into a steel block. They then push liquid acrylic slurry through the steel block and it hardens as a solid acrylic. They then keep "extruding" the acrylic into a solid.

Cast Acrylic, their is a 3D mold of the final form. They polish it.

Cast Acrylic is MUCH stronger. also about 4x more expensive.
