So I had a 2 day marine biology unit I taught to 20 students that I had for the entire day both days and we went to the aquarium. I had seen a post from someone asking if the club had any affiliations or relationships with the aquarium. No one had responded to it and since I was there I thought I would ask. The education coordinator said that Rob Brynda (the curator) is into coral propagation and belongs to some club or network she couldn't remember, but I should contact him. So should I contact him and what should I suggest if I do? Or should I pass his info on to the board and let them handle it? Board what do you think? Forming some kind of hobbyist museum connection that promotes captive propagation over wild caught specimens would definitely be good for all.

Anything would be good for the aquarium IMO.

ROFLOL. OK, yes, that's what I meant. Just trying to be more diplomatic than usual.

I think the Aquarium should create a part time position: Liaison with MASC. And then they should hire me for it. I'm almost positive that we could improve their coral selection and health, to the point that it would be an enjoyable activity for everyone, including people who have tanks at home. May not ever get to the level of Monterey, but it could certainly be better.

And it should pay at least 6 figures.

(Cindy if BOD agrees...you owe me a little kickback :) )

HA!! No need for 6 figures, but a lil something would be nice. You know, so I could afford some more corals and maybe a fish or two. And you'd definitely get a kickback. Prolly in the form of frags. LOL.

Doesn't someone from there attend Elite Reef Fest? I remember buying some nice frags from the aquarium at Elite Reef a couple years ago.

Doesnt Landrys own yalls aquarium? We have 2 down here, one is Landry owned and one is more community based. The Landrys aquarium doesnt participate in MARSH, however Moody Gardens invites the reef club to do a behind the scenes tank tour. They show us the giant skimmers and pumps, they have a frag grow out section, and the kids get to feed the fish.

I believe that you are correct. Doesn't participate with MARSH or won't? I ask because I don't want to invest the time if Landry's has some kind of policy against it. I know that we could do something behind the scenes, but I am not sure what it would entail. The Ed Coordinator said that they could definitely do something like that, but at what cost and to what depth I am not sure. I know there are a lot of opinions about our local public aquarium, but I think with the right approach this could be a mutually beneficial relationship.

We could provide a wealth of knowledge, experience, and volunteer our time or animals and in exchange get some livestock for our own tanks. Our DBTC program is a great idea and why not extend that to be more inclusive rather than exclusive. If they were cleared out so quickly at Elite Reef Fest we must feel that they have something to offer us. Not to mention the opportunity to get behind the scenes and get some good ideas for my/your next build. Why not try to help them become the aquarium we would like to see and benefit ourselves in the process?

Any one from the BOD have ideas or experience with them? I am really just wondering if this has been attempted and what about with the zoo? I have always thought their displays were pretty well done.

I dont know Landrys policies, just speaking from experiences in MARSH. Everything Landrys does is an attempt to make money, atleast here it is. Our Landrys facility is filled with common fish found at any fish store, or caught in the Gulf. It wouldnt hurt to try to open up communication (with BOD approval). Seems like it would benefit everyone.

I really wish our club had a more formal DBTC program. Quick side question, what is elite reef fest?

Not sure about Elite Reef Fest. I am pretty new to the club. That is why I am asking instead of just starting a conversation I am not in a position to start!

Far as I know none of the current BOD has any experience with the Aquarium or the Zoo. However I would be all ears for any idea you had and what maybe you want to achieve in relationship between the two of us. However just from my experience ideas like these are awesome and take a little bit of leg work to get off the ground. The next challenge is to keep participation levels up because as people fall in and fall out of the hobby and club sometimes programs get lost and go by the way side. However pending your ideas, we could maybe create a couple month long program or trial run a program. Either way keep thinking, brainstorming and talking. Im on board and here to help.

Elite Reef Fest is one day event that our sponsor Elite Reef holds at their local fish store. They have super sales, high levels of stock in type of goods, prizes and tons of fun.

If they had better/healthier corals, it would help their reputation, and that would mean higher revenue. We can definitely help them with that.
