Pumpless, switchless, automatic top off idea

I was watching a friend of mine refill his dogs' automatic water dispenser. I'm sure most of you have probably seen them before. It's just a jug, flipped upside down, with the opening submerged in water. It keeps the water of that dish at the same level all the time and prevents the water in the jug above the dish from emptying onto the floor.
So it immediately made me wonder if this would work for an aquarium setup. It would be so easy, use no moving parts, and would keep the water at whatever level you set the opening to.

I built a little prototype for a 20L that I have using a 1 liter, plastic bottle. I drilled a hole in the cap and put a piece of 1/2"(?) plastic tubing in and sealed it. Then cut the tubing to where I want the water level to stay. I need to build a little mount for it so that it sits above the water line, but the fresh water stays up in the bottle.

I posted because I was wondering if anyone else has seen a setup like this or has any foresight into why this might not work.

Thanks!

it could work for fresh water but i dont see how di/ro water would not mix with salt water. osmosis?higher concentration will move to lower concentration and even out.

I've seen this done with nano tanks and regular soda bottles. I don't know how well it works, however. I didn't know the people very well who were doing it, so I didn't ask about it.

Unless there is a convective current, diffusion is a solution like that will be incredibly small. With a small opening like that you really don't have to worry about it. With a small tank its a great way to do a top off.

Ive personally used this method and I know Aquamart has a nano where they use a small 12oz water bottle for the ATO, its just a matter of making sure the container is constantly full of ro.
