So in my continued planning stage, I'm looking for opinions on the Tunze wavemakers (I like them but how safe are they for keeping an anemone) and how do they compare (effectiveness) with either a Carlson and Borneman diy device? Looking for any opinions/experience with any of these. I like what I've seen on the web for the tunze but like the price of the DIY Carlson/Borneman better. ;)

check out the jabeo wp series pumps. That is what about 35-45% of what the club uses. I use them on my 120g and love them. And they are cheap :)

Both of those are nice options, but aren't necessary. The Tunze is expensive and the DIY wavemakers seem like a pita. I don't have a "waves" on my 120 and everything is happy, including my nem. too each his own...

I have a tunze wavebox I bought on the forum and absolutely love it. Dont know how necessary they actually are but I like the movement it makes throughout the entire tank. I have a bunch of nems and soft coral and they look really cool in the current. Only drawback is they do take up some room inside the tank.

Just my $.02.

Can you tell us a little more about the tank? Dimensions, other means of flow etc.

Seems to me that wave boxes have their place in some tanks but no so much in others. In terms of nem safety I think you are likely to be fine if they are established and not moving around. That said there is always the possibility one might get into the pump housing which wouldn't be pretty.

Personally I think DIY wave box based on the Tunze design is a great way to go to if you like to tinker. A Carlson surge device just seems way to cumbersome to me, as to whether or not you would have any added benefit from a Carlson I could not say as iv never used one. I cant image its better than a Tunze wavebox however. Same goes for the Borneman.

In the case of making your own Tunze knockoff, the Jaebo would probably be a good option because they are so cheap in case you dont like it. I'm sure you'd have no problem selling that Jaebo here should that be the case.

Of course some may not like this link but you could use it as a baseline to decide if you want to attempt a DIY.

Interesting link. Someone reverse engineered the tunze wavebox just like jabao probably did lol. That's how they roll in China.

waves in a tank aren't totally necessary, but boy does a tank look a lot better with a good wave. The other bonus is that you don't have to worry about peeling a coral off it's skeleton with too-hard single-direction flow.

We like the WP pumps so much that he sold his Tunze wave maker.

First off, the tank is a 210 gallon (6'x24" deep x ~30" high? (just bought it from up north of town). As to the pumps, just afraid of adding Nem to a new tank and having it wander into a pump, so maybe thinking/trying to stay away from pumps in the tank and get the necessary water movement between my return pump with oscilating returns of some sort, and some sort of wave action, again, in an attempt to stay away from pumps/shredders in the tank :) (not sure my desire is even possible but... ) :)

I went with a couple SeaSwirls and a powerful return pump on the nem tank I just set up and so far have been very happy with them. No chance of the nem getting hurt lots of random flow and zero maintenance. I don't have that cool swaying motion you get with a wave box though.

Never thought about in tank pumps hurting my nems...
