So today is the first time I have ever really considered getting out of the hobby. First I am sick of algae, second is lighting, third is just me being impatient. So here is what I am gonna try I am running an ro so I thought oh that will cure algae issues. Well it probably would if I would have used a glass container for water storage. Apparently the food grade plastic storage container I have been using is leaching something into the water. How do I know this because there is brown sludge algae(a term coined on other sites) in the container. Secondly is lighting. Everyone knows I am running vega and I do like the color I can create in the tank. However I had them 12 inches awl. Well at that high they don't do squat for par. So I moved them down 2 inches tonight and they greatly improved however tomorrow I am going to move them 8 inches and recheck the par. I just can't bring myself to put them between 4-6 inches awl. And lastly patience I am about out of it. I know this is a new tank that's only been running since may but ugh I am just frustrated it has never taken me this long. I guess that is what I get for doing things the right way. Lastly I started running gfo in hopes it will cure at least one of my problems( thanks Vince at great white for helping me out there) you may have saved my sanity if it works. More to follow as it progresses

We've all been there. Relax and remember that it's a learning process, only bad stuff happens fast, and size matters.

Trust me it has been a very long afternoon I am just at my wits end.
Imo you need to be more confident in your decisions, you need to chose one path and stick to it. Dosing pumps or calcium reactor. LEDs or t-5s just stick to one plan one routine. You know what to do you just have to trust yourself.

We have been doing display tanks for the last 25 years and never once have I been concerned with lighting par. I have tanks with T5, LED, Metal Halide and yes T12 VHO and all of them do great. 80% of them do not even have any kind of reactor for dosing or whatever. Yes I have had outbreaks with cyano and hair algae, haven't we all? Allot of times these outbreaks occur from the owner, not the maintenance person, being over jealous about feeding. I don't know how many times I have had to educate owners about feeding their fish. Those things will go away on their own if you just give it time and a few water changes. Each one of our tanks is completely unique and the outcomes are different. IMO if you just give it some time and leave it alone, go hunting or something :), I think success will be in your future. Trust me I am not at all happy with our display 185g at the shop. Things aren't going the way I want them to but I am just letting it ride cause I know if I do it will be fine. Andrew just give your tank some time and things will be good, let it ride. Glad we could help! We are always here for you and all of the rest of our wonderful customers!!! Thanks for your support.

I agree with mike and Vince and Cindy. Not that I have a lot of room to talk but just be patient. I've almost ignored my tank for the past 6 weeks and the coral (what's left) looks better than ever. I just feed, check alk and such, and run the magnet around every once in a while. Stick to one approach! Lots of stuff will work in this hobby. Changing from one to another doesn't. Make your decision and stick to it for a year or more. All the tanks and people I respect the most in this addiction have strong opinions about how to run a tank, and they stick to them. Many of them have slightly different approaches but at the core are the same and they defend the position passionately. If they have great results they obviously know something. Back I. The day I "copied" Steve Chang and had great results. Water changes, skimming and kalkwasser. My new tank will have almost the same recipe, with a lot of sump space, live rock, and a calcium reactor. I'm goona go slow! And enjoy it! I'm not adding any more coral, besides the great deals I got from gonzo yesterday (oops), till I have coraline algae all over the back glass.

Long point made short. Don't over think, enjoy the little stuff, keep your hands out! And keep your hands out. Don't take everyone's advice. Find a tank you like and copy.

Enjoy your tank! Let it help you relax because that is what it is supposed to do. It shouldn't stress you out. By the way I could use some help at the shop when your free. This will keep your mind off it. HA! :)

I do keep my hands out. I am trying those things of lowering the light because yes the numbers are way to low to support acros at that high. I know the algae will go away but I hardly feed maybe once every 3 days. I have been doing 35g water change once a week. I am just baffled. At least when the 125 crashed I knew what the problem was. I do appreciate everyone's support.
