Try to syphon water backwards from the tank and turn it on when its syphoning backwards. I have done this before by attaching a pump on the sumpside and sucking water backwards throught the line or use a pump to force the water from the sump up the return line through the pump and plug in when you have water in the pump. water running threw your pump is one of two means of cooling the pump down
I'm sure it would be hot without the water

+1 You can also pull the cap off and check the impellor, it needs alot of water to prime them not just a little if there are any airbubbles it might not start. Make sure your return is not pointed out of the water or you will have a mess.
