So I have a DE 250 watt 3 bulb fixture that has a fan. The fan is on a timer to turn on with the lights and it is the loudest part of my system. Is it necessary to run the fan? I thought running hot was good for MH bulbs. If it is necessary any ideas for making it quieter?

Is it worn out our just naturally loud. If it is DC, you can probably find a quieter fan. MH can run hot, but they don't have to - you can easily touch all of my fixtures.

Reason I ask is I have two pendants that are vented but not running fans. One of my goals with the new setup was to quiet down the machine noise and I replaced the noise of my iwaki with a noisy fan.

They don't need them. If your tank will stay cool without it, then you can turn it off. I use AquaMedic pendants and they don't have/need fans.

Unplugged it this morning and enjoyed a nice quiet day minus the crazy 7th and 8th graders!
