So I have been saving my spent DI resin for many years (should have done this ages ago but had been putting it off). Currently I have a 5g bucket of spent resin that is now full, so can't put it off any longer. Its time to recharge it

I will be roughly following this procedure to do so
https://reefkeeping.com/issues/2008-09/nftt/index.php

Here's a detailed video on the subject that helps make it clear how and why this is possible.

First before I can start the process I need to collect a few things

Muratic acid (hydrochloric acid)
Lye (sodium hydroxide)

4 new 5g buckets (1 for each, RO water, Rinsing, Lye solution, Muratic acid solution)
Some 2ltr soda bottles
Valve caps for the 2ltr bottles
Colander
Sheer material to cover the colander
Clips to hold it in place
Large ziplock bags to store the resin in afterward

Also Need new batteries for my portable TDS meter

So now on to collect all the stuff I need and wait for a nice day outside to start the process. Stay tuned, more to come

Once you do set up separate cation and anion cartridges, makes the whole process 100 times easier

Ya I am debating whether to keep separate or re mix them after the recharge. Leaning toward keeping sperate because my water downtown is so high in silicates and the anions always deplete much faster then the cations.
However that will mean that I need to add several more DI stages to my RO filter to make sure I use the each canister fully. Would want to run 2 cartridges of both types if they are separate to ensure I always get maximum effectiveness from each

Finally got around to doing this. Took about 4-5 hours to do that bucket worth of DI, but now I have 2x 2.5g buckets of each type of resin, plus one big bag of mixed bed.

I used:
4 bottle of Lye (sodium Hydroxide) - Drain cleaner
1 bottle of Muratic Acid - Muratic Acid
appx. 30g of RO water for mixing and rinsing
Found a large colander and a sheer cloth from Goodwill.
250 micron Sieve I had from doing copepods
4x 5g buckets
2x 2.5g buckets
2x 1g jugs with holes drilled in the caps (used for rinsing the resin)
