Alright so I might've bitten off more than I can chew. I got an Alpine aftermarket stereo to put into my beast. What's the issue? The Alpine has a tricky harness and my car was made before they invented stereo harnesses. How exactly do I wire this thing up so that I don't drain my battery when my car isn't on, IOW how do I hardwire it to the ignition? Also may need to put in a bracket, how exactly do I do that? I don't really feel like paying $400+ to cartoys for installation. I can pay someone or trade work if you prefer.

+1 You can run the red to a fuse under your dash on your fuse pannel, just make sure its one that has power only when the key is on. Even if your car is older it should still have a constant power ran along with your speaker wires, hook that one up to the remote wire(orange, or yellow). If you need help just drive to my house and i can wire it up for you
Your car value will double with the stereo in it...
. I prefer the redneck method myself, rip out the center console...go to walmart and buy a boombox, power invertor, and duct tape. Place where center console used to be. Insert power inverter where car stero would normally go, and duct tape to finish the install. BaM...new stereo and anti theft device all in one. No one will want to break into your car when they see that inside...and it will sound great...well at least on the side of the car the stereo is pointing. But unless the passenger is giving money or (censored) it doesnt matter!

Switched power = red

Ground = black
Blue = remote for amp or power antennae (gonna assume it doesn't have either)
Run new wires for your speakers
Install radio into glove box (or if you have a big center console) so you don't cut up the dash and you can keep it hidden
You can use plumbers strap (the bendy metal with holes in it) from home depot and make just about any type of support bracket you need. You can also use abs plastic to trim it and the thickness of the abs will help hold the "cage" if you decide to go dash.

So I got 6x9's, stereo, and harness coming this week. Still need 3.5's, wire, connectors, and to decide on the location. wedged between the seat sounds good except for the cooling, in the glove box sounds good except for switching stations. I no longer want to destroy the dash, since it's not even my car. Keeping it hidden is key since I have keyless entry. Ideas?

Don't use 3.5 they aren't worth the money (go at least 4" or even better, hack the doors and put 5.25-6" there) If you decide you must, don't get hard dome/titanium tweeters (most 3.5's are two way speakers), make sure you get soft or silk dome tweeters otherwise your ears will bleed. High pitched sound will reflect off the glass and hit you square in the noggin...can be waay to harsh assuming the 3.5 are dash mount. Glove box is good. no remote for radio?
Ipod adapter? if so, run ipod cable to the back of the ashtray and hide the pod cable there so you can change that on the fly at least.
If you want, I'm off friday and have time while the kids are at school, you can bring your stuff over to my house and I can help you...bring a fire extinguisher and some cheetos just in case of an emergency.
