Well after three months with the tank setup and struggling i decided to break it down and restart. I had two main problems with the tank.
1. Used a bad sand, it seems to trap diarists and was causing many problems.
2. Not happy with the LED light, i have horrible growth and coloration is poor. I have decided to move back to MH with the AIs being supplements for the blue spec. Plan on running 14k phionex bulbs.
So attached is an old pic. Along with a new rock work configuration i have put together. Nothing as far as plumbing or finish on the wall will change.

If you're blasting the AI blues, why not run 10000K bulbs (for growth)? Will the blues be overpowered by the MH?
Thats what i was afraid of, it seemed like i might get an entirely different coloration or spec when the MH were on. Plus the LEDs will be running at 30% or less so im afraid they may be over powered pretty easy.

Great thing about MH and LED combo, is you can play with it. I have 2 -250W Pheonix bulbs and when they are on, my blue LEDs (24 CREE XPE 5w RB, and 12 UV 3w) are on 10%. Not overpowering at all.

Did you do the white trim on the wall outside the tank? Really looks sharp and professional.

Yea i think I'm gonna like the LED and MH combo. Yea i did all the trim, did a similar design in a clients house a while back and loved it so i had to incorporate it.

Right now with my test MH i find that 25% works good while the halides are on then up to 35% when they turn off. How long do u run your halides for? I use to run mine back in the day for 4 hours, so i had assumed that would work then run the LEDs for a couple hours on both sides.

So my LED is a Rapid LED DIY. I have it all controlled via the APEX. Blue LEDs come on at 930am, and ramp up until 1000. At 1000, Whites turn on and both stay on until 1205. From 1200 - 8pm, hallides are on, so 8hrs. (use to be 9hrs when I had t5's). When MH are on, blues are only at 10%. At 750pm, whites and blues ramp back on. and at 10pm, whites go out.... with blues ramping down to off at 1030pm.

Dam thats a long photo period, thats about what i have now with my LEDs but with power consumption i was hoping to shirten the length oh halides. So i run three AI super sol blues then i was subing in two 250watt halides. I like lights coming on earlier so i can see them to feed when im home in the afternoon so i will probably ramp up the LEDs at

10am from 0-35% on a 60 min ramp
2pm whites down to 5% blues to 35% halides on
8pm whites to 20% blues to 35% halides off
10pm ramp down to 2% blue nights on 120min ramp

Thats a six hour halide cycle, think that works?

What size tank are u running? How deep? And what size halides?

Yep do it right and be strong! LOL I know how hard it is to wait. I lost a lot of SPS on my last tank thinking I waited long enough. Patience saves you money and heartache!
