sand

#1
so I have a 29 bio cube that I ripped the back out of it put a cpr over flow with a sump and Skimmer it's established 1 year with zoas acans and clams, currently it has white sugar sand in it, I want to replace it with black sand. my question is can I siphon out the sand and just replace it or what would be the best way to do it thanks in advance

If it were me, I'd put everything in buckets/tubs with water, take out the sand, put in the new sand, put in the new sand, and replace the rocks and livestock. Shouldn't take long, really.

As long as the rock doesn't dry out or get cold while you're doing it, I'd expect no worse than a mini cycle from the sand change, which you'd have no matter what. I'd feed kinda light and definitely do your water changes until you know it's settled down.
Depending on the condition your current sand is in, you might release toxins when you disturb it. That would be worse than a cycle.

I would not think you would have to go through another cycle, being that I assume you have a appropriate amount of rock. In addition I would totally agree with CindyL, if you have a medium to deep sand bed toxins could be settled in the deeper part of the sand bed. For this reason you would want to avoid releasing these toxins into your water column, hence draining the tank and removing the rock and livestock. Best of luck!

Love that black sand! We've got that in the nano, and it looks really cool. Glad you got it all sorted out and redone. Now let's cross fingers that you don't have more than a mini cycle.

are you going to put a screen over the top of it? BRS sells everything you need for that...was going to do the same thing
just haven't taken the time to try it.

I'm gonna make screens for my tank either today or tomorrow. I loved the ones I had on the 125, and it looks pretty simple.

loved the screen if nothing else to keep things from falling into the tank
