Ok so I've always been nervous about bleaching filter socks and that so I always just ware water and scrub and scrub my filter socks thill they look halfway clear

I've read that hydrogen peroxide is a great way to desolve the organic matter.

Anyone use vinegar or muratic acid?

Just looking for suggestions, I use brs large filter socks with the plastic ring

How do you clean your filter socks?

I ran the laundry machine with just bleach (to rinse the soap residue and sanitize it); ran again with hot water, bleach, and filter socks; ran again with filter socks/rinse cycle.

Used dryer on medium settings to dry.

Was I being paranoid, probably?

I use hydrogen peroxide to dissolve the organic matter, and rinse extremely well in the sink with hot water. Seems to work great for me

I rinse them the best I can first to remove all the debrie I can and ring them out multiple times until the water runs clear. I then store them in a 10 gallon bucket with vinegar to soak until I have enough to do a load in the washing machine. I don't know if the vinegar does much except keep them from getting super rank.

i run the washing machine on a rinse cycle first to rinse out any detergent and what not then run the socks through a super hot heavy soil cycle twice. They come out white as can be super clean and no smell what so ever. I don't use bleach or anything else. So far it's working well for me.

however wife is not cool with me using her washing machine for " stinky gross fish stuff" so I'll probably be purchasing a portable washer I've been eyeing with some good ratings. It's super small and then at least I know there isn't any soap residue in it. I worry about soap and bleach as well. However I know several people who use bleach on them they just say to put the socks through an extra rinse cycle and give them time to dry completely. Apperantly the bleach will evaporate out if there is any left. I don't know if there is any truth to that though.

i want to say Capp told me this once but I'm not 100% sure but I bet he would have good advice as well as jda123. Doug time for you to chime I'm.

5 gallon bucket, 2 gallon mix of 30% peroxide and let it sit for a few hours. Pull it out, rinse it and call it good. Remember the byproducts of hydrogen peroxide is water and hydrogen, so shouldn't pose a threat to the tank.

I'm getting one of these for mine. Overkill I know but beats ****ing off my wife. After all she does clean my cloths and cook my food. Lol
1- you're the king of overkill. this is why your fish room is the envy of all of Denver, and you have the most fabulous tank I've ever seen.
2- you're a smart man!

I use draw string filter socks I made.

What I do is a warm wash with bleach. then an extra rinse cycle. No cleaning agents.

Then I hang them in the bathroom to dry due to the dryer normally pulls out the draw string.

All I do is throw in washer with bleach and extra rinse cycle, and let dry for a couple of days. Worked well for me and it's super easy.

At Aquatic Art, we wash in the machine on normal cycle with bleach and hang dry.

Here is how i do it, but I might switch to peroxide or Oxiclean:
1. turn them inside out, run water thru them in the sink holding with one hand, and a plastic bristle scrub brush brushing downward until most brown color is flushed off.
2. turn back to normal, repeat above.
3.Place in 5 gallon bucket 1/2 full with about a cup of bleach, stir and let sit for a day.
4. rinse thoroughly until I smell just a little bleach. Let sit outside in the sun for a day.
5. Smell test again- there is still just a hint of bleach. Rinse again and then use.

(I remember doing my dry rock with bleach and water, and took a pH reading- It was like 11.874 - very basic). Maybe a little bleach will raise your pH :p

I have always thought that filter socks are a PITA! What are the benefits to using them? How often do you have to clean them?
