Gonzo's generosity today has inspired me. I'm going to give away some corals. Instead of a DBTC, this is simply a gift. Do with them what you will. The main conditions are that you have to come to my house and pick up your prize by Feb 7th. Fair warning: my fellow Parrotheads are going to have a distinct advantage in all 3 giveaways.

1. A few months ago, I was gifted with some Copper Pennies (aka Pink n Golds), no strings attached, and they've grown like mad in my tank. Spread out over my sand like a blanket. So I'm going to pay that forward, and offer up a colony of them. To win, you have to post up the real meaning of the song "Diamond as Big as the Ritz" by my favorite musician. 1st one to get it right wins.

2. At today's white elephant, we got a green Nepthya that I already happen to have in both my 180 and the nuvo, so I'm also paying this forward as a gift. To win this coral, you must explain my screen name (what song it applies to, what it means, etc). 1st one to do so wins. This one is the toughest one for non-Parrotheads, so I reserve the right to give clues. No clues necessary! MTMJR1992 wins.

"Fins Up!" is a command to put both hands above your head, palms together, to form your own shark dorsal fin. This is done for the song Fins, during which Jimmy instructs Parrotheads in a group 'swim' with the lyrics "Fins to the left! Fins to the right!" It's physically impossible for one to execute this move without smiling, so it's a Parrothead's way of sayin' "Smile! Life is good."

3. Also at today's white elephant, we got a green toadstool and 2 mushrooms, which, as it turns out, I already have (yeah, Mike's a big SPS guy, but I'm kinda a fan of leathers, zoas, and mushrooms, and I have lots of them). So I'm gifting these also. To win this one, I want you to post up the name of YOUR favorite song by MY favorite musician, and tell me why it's your favorite. Entries must be posted up by next Saturday (Feb 1st) at midnight. I will choose a winner Sunday morning when I wake up.

Thanks. The folks in this club have given me a lot. Giving back/paying forward does more for me than it does anyone else, I think. LOL

As a big buffet fan myself I'll give it a shot. By the way the most diverse crowd you'll ever see at a concert.

I think Diamond as big as the ritz is about someone who has all the money and fame but can't find happiness with it.

Absolutely right on the crowd diversity. You learn a lot about how similar we all really are when you see lawyers, senior execs, poor college kids, trash men, bikers, and grannies all jammin' to the same music in the same place. All the bullcrap titles, socioeconomic status, etc, mean nothing during those 3 hours. We're all barefoot children in the rain, so to speak, and that means more.

And close but not quite on the meaning of the song. Fortunately, you can have as many guesses as you like!

So i believe your screen name applies to jimmy buffett and the song "Fins". Now Fins Up is a command given in the song where you lift both of your hands up to symbolize a shark Fin, its also a signature move to help define jimmy buffet fans or parrotheads.

I don't want the corals, but I like Pascagoula Run as a metaphor for how much fun we can have when we get out of comfort zone for a while.

Okay Cindy,
Got to go with "This Old Hotel" Just because it shows the fun and imagination of Jimmy Buffet. I love this song because it's quirky and well, just parrot heady? is that a word? I remember my first concert with him and have to say it was a big sing along.:)

One of my favorites! Reminds me very much of my own crazy uncle, and how I took him out of his own comfort zone by taking him to a Buffett show a few years before he passed. He wore wild Hawaiian shirts every day afterwards, and his kids wondered what the heck I put in his margarita at the show.

I think the first one may have some old literature tied to it, if anyone is trying to win that one =P Maybe I'm off though.
You are 100% correct. It references a story by F Scott Fitzgerald by the same name. It's Jimmy's favorite song on the album Barometer Soup, and one of my very favorite songs that he does, because the message is so powerful.

you're within spitting distance of the Copper Pennies. Greed is the key word. If you just elaborate slightly on the actual message, they're yours.

I think it's mainly about the Greed of people, and how they can become completely overcome by it. They set a goal for their greed which is truly unattainable and it drives everything in their life.
