Carbon or gfo would be best. Carbon to remove toxins and help keep the water clear, gfo if you have phosphates or a lot of algae. Might be able to run both together too as long as the carbon doesn't tumble around and break up the gfo, which would result in a big pile of goo

Ya you could separate the two with sponges or I have heard of people just putting both in together. Either way Just pack the carbon in between the sponges so it doesn't move.

Likely could ya, but at the very least it will turn the water a muddy red. As long as the carbon isn't rolling around and you have just enough flow running through it to make the gfo gently roll around then you should be good

Start with a small quantity of GFO (less than the recommended amount in the instructions). You don't want to strip too much out of the water at once. You can mix the carbon and GFO together and like syn said, don't let it tumble or it will break the carbon down to dust.

Run bio pellets if youre running a skimmer. You will have 0 phosphates and nitrates. There's people who run them and haven't done water changes since they set the tank up

Zeobak is 1 of a 4 part system. Culture additive helps but isn't required with bio pellets. If you want to add cultures I would use micro bacter7 from brightwell

If you don't have a specific problem that you are trying to solve, then you can do more harm than good by using any type of media. What are you looking to do?
