I use a not sure what is called but got it at Auto Zone for $20.00. You plug into car lighter outlet and then can plug any regular plug into it. I have tested and it did run pumps and heater. it costs me my gas but that is much cheaper then my fish and corals. They come in different sizes and prices. I do agree a generator would be a good idea but this would work for an emergency situation.
