Turning a fresh water tank to salt water?

So after looking around on here and taking a trip to Elite Reef..... I am pretty much SOLD on getting a salt water tank, my question is, is it easier to just buy an RR tank or try to convert my cichlid tank over to an RR tank?

Agreed. I contemplated doing the same thing and ended up getting a new tank instead. You won't regret having a reef ready setup.

Welcome to salt water. Your in for a ride. I would start new. Do it right first time and even though it might be pricey in beginning you will be more happy and successful in long run.

I spent a lot of money setting up a non RR tank and after problems of loosing a syphon and flooding several times, I spent a even more to get a reef ready tank. If I would have started with an RR I would have ended up saving money. It's easier to bite the bullet and get a solid RR the first time around.

what type of tank do you have? can it be drilled?? if so you can convert it to RR easy peezy

There are aquariums always going up for sale here. Someone is sizing up or getting out. You could wait for the type and size of tank you want here and save a lot of money. Like said above, go with a tank with built in overflows.

if i was you i would start new because i did the same thing i converted my fw to sw and i know that i would have been a lot happier if i started new with this i mind if your current
tank is not drilled it will be a b**ch if you can't find anyone to drill it for you so start new in my opinion

Drill it, its easy and you dont have to buy a tank. If you need a bit let me know i have at least two or three you can borrow. I do agree though either drill or buy a rr tank dont do the syphon deals, imo your just asking for an overflow using those.

Hey sorry I was off the forum all weekend THANKS for all the good replies.... a few answers

1) No my current tank does not have overflows
2) Its an acrylic 130 gallon
3) No its not drilled
4) I have been looking on here there are always awesome deals, also thanks to the people that also PM'd me
5) I know you will Evan, Krista is even kinda excited about getting one
6) I plan on doing all right the first time, I have heard to many horror storys!!

And now another question

I love the look of the bow front salt water tanks, is there ANY advantage to bow v rectangle or strictly preference?

I love my bow front!!! Some people say that you get some destortion but its very minimal!! There hard to come by if you want a 90 gallon or larger. Most bow fronts don't have a canopy cause there a pain in the azz to make. If you need anything just ask. My now front will be up for sale in a few weeks I'll make you a good deal on it

CL has some crazy deals at times, I got a full 120 setup for what most people ask for a 55 setup.

I have a bowfront also, with the same finish as Craig's (cherry oak). Me and my wife really like the sleek look but with it being a 175g, it is 6' high with stand and canopy. Great for viewing, a but tuff for maintenance.

Ya I have been searching CL I think I'll sell my cichlid tank and then get my Salt Water set up..... I just really have to decide what I want tank wise, I love bow fronts but for less money I could get a rectangle tank thats much bigger ya know..... I really want to find a FULL SETUP though thats what I'm really shooting for!

People on here know what the stuff will actually sell for most stuff on Craig's is over priced not all but.... Besides we're a community and were here to help everyone. I paid 500 for my bow front when I knew nothing about the hobby I got ripped off didn't even have the canopy.
