Ya they don't float around really. I have them growing in my mangrove tank and grow across the rocks and the backside of the tank some. You can see mostly the fern stuff growing on the rock in the pic. The grape stuff is also mixed in there but not evident in the pic

Personally with that small of a tank, I would just move everything in 5g buckets, add airstone with battery operated air pump, and you should be good. You can wrap with blankets if you think they might get cold but temps right now are pretty agreeable, so should be fine unless the trip is going...

I haven't ran a skimmer in many years. So I would say, they certainly have their uses but I would not say they are required especially with a lightly stocked tank
