digitate hydroids

#1
Soo, after my battle with the vermin vermetid snails, I now have some wonderful digitate hydroids, lucky me!!! They are annoying my zoas and mushrooms, and have read that if they get large enough they can kill fish. Does anyone have suggestions on how to annihilate these little $#|+$???

Kalk paste them. Put just enough water in it to make it the consistency of putty. Then just slather them in it and they will all be dead in a matter of hours.

Has anyone used Fenbendazole?
Are you removing the rock to treat it?

Fenbendazole is a dewormer. Along with the hydroids, you will also be killing any bristle worms, spaghetti worms, and filter-feeding fan worms in your tank. You could very well do more harm than good adding that to your display tank...the die-off could potentially cause a large nutrient spike in your tank.

If you want to remove the rock, place it in a hospital tank, and treat it...then it may be an option. But considering they are irritating your zoas it's probably safe to assume that they share a rock with your livestock. I'd recommend against going that route and just try to spot treat instead.

The large rocks I have I will glue them shut. The other rocks are small, 3" x 3", which have mushrooms on them. The hydroids are also growing in between the polyps of zoa frags on my rack. Would a dip of fenbendazole harm the zoas or shrooms?

Hard to say...I would try to remove one and test the treatment to see how the coral does. That, or look around some of the larger forums to see if anybody else has had success with this treatment on rocks with coral on them.

Just buy some pickling lime, mix 50/50 with RO water and microwave for 40 secs. Then just use a syringe from paharmacy (usually they will give you one for free) and cover the hydroids. This works really well I assure you :p

Thanks!! This will be perfect. Gluing and pasting would be tough because I can't see them when they're retracted, and don't want to seal the rock shut. Have you battled these before?

They seem to be multiplying rapidly in my tank. I'm assuming I want a thick paste like consistency with the pickling lime and RO water? Syringe like hypodermic needle?

Doesnt even have to be a hypodermic needle. I use a syringe that came with an old test kit. If you make it thick enough, you can spread it on like butter with no syringe.
