Magnetic ballast and airport security

So I've been on the hunt for and old school Dual 400w PFO M135 magnetic ballast and finally just found one in San Francisco. Ill be out there on business soon and have already set up a time to meet the guy selling it to me.

Heres the deal though, this thing is stupid heavy so I was hoping to bring it back with me in my checked baggage rather than paying $70 in shipping. Anyone think this will be an issue?

I mean it is a big heavy box with wires come out all over. Also wasn't sure what kind of weirdness they might experience trying to run the thing through the xray machine. Last thing I want it for it to get confiscated or somehow delay my flight.

Hahaha. Sure you don't wanna check your luggage? :p

In reality though, they may inspect the item by itself and question you a bit. They have that test where they swap it and run it through an analyzer to test for anything explosive. I think between that and the Xray you would be fine...but yea...a slight delay may be inevitable.

edit: for some reason I thought you said you were carrying it on. Yea I wouldn't think twice about checking that in your luggage. You should see the crap I've had medical device reps bring to our offices from out of state.

You should be fine checking the bag. Make sure you arrive plenty early incase they pull it for additional screening. Worst case I could see is the bag misses your flight and they just deliver it later to your house.
Maybe check the TSA website for anything magnet related, but I think it's fine.

As long as it is not on a prohibited items list (which I can't imagine it would be) you shouldn't have any trouble. Keep us posted

You can definately have that in checked baggage. I do that all the time with omicron testing systems for work. You will definately want a decent amount of padding around it and a hard suitcase would be best since they more or less throw around any checked bags

Good to know thanks for the input! I didn't think there should be a problem but better to be safe than sorry. Now if I can just find one more of these bad boys that's a little closer to home. :)

I plan on using these to overdrive the bajeezus out of a couple 400w Radiums
