I think it's mainly about the Greed of people, and how they can become completely overcome by it. They set a goal for their greed which is truly unattainable and it drives everything in their life.

The story/song is about a man that found an enormous single diamond (diamond as big as the Ritz), and became consumed and controlled by his greed and desire to protect the diamond. He became a slave to it, committing horrendous acts because of his greed.
