That is the question
As hobbiest were always looking for ways and upgrades to make our ecosystems run better and easier, but sometimes these upgrades can cause issues as I sure some of us have dealt with, in other instances upgrades that go wrong can open up possibilities for other tank improvements, this is something I have recently encountered.
I scored a little 7gal fuge for my BC29, it came with Tunze 9002 skimmer. Big upgrade from the stock filtration and Coralife skimmer.
i decided to be impatient and set this fuge up and made a mistake I didn't even think about beforehand. The combination of new sand I put in the fuge caused a mini cycle, which I was prepared for. What I was not prepared for was the CUC die off that happened over night and the extreme ammonia spike this caused, this in turn causing nitrates to eventually spike. CRASH!
good news was the kiddos tank is fully cycled and good to go. All my corals were moved into his 14gal and I borrowed an LED from Josh to supplement. Corals doing decent. All 5 fish and cleaner shrimp also doing fine.
So, now I'm waiting on this mini cycle to finish, staying on top of water changes and watching things gradually get back to normal, but now I have outside filtration and am no longer using in InTank filtration.
so, with no coral in the tank, just fish, sand and rock, and with it doing this little cycle I'm thinking right now is prime time to cut that back wall out and give the little cube a bigger foot print.
good idea? Bad idea? I obviously have to do this with the fish and sand still in the tank, or should I remove the fish and rock entirely drain some water and then do it. I'm trying to do this quickly without agitating as much as possible.
