I personally think skimming is skimming. I have a new Aquamaxx ConeS CO-3, and an old AquaC EV180, and to be honest, the skimmate smells the same, looks the same... I'm doing side by side comparisons now, but am not so impressed with the new to say, old is old. Kind of cryptic I know, but still am testing and haven't drawn up all conclusions yet. Good luck.

I won't pretend to be an expert but in my experience if you are going with a reputable brand and are comparing comparable sized skimmers, it's the pump that makes a bigger difference over the shape.

New skimmer lines typically equal disaster. Most of them need tweaks before they get good. Every once in a while a new skimmer will perform pretty well, but maybe (guessing) 1 in 5. Get a tried and true one, IMO.

Skimz isn't really a new skimmer. They have been around in Europe for a bit. Brs recently started importing them. They are a dc powered skimmer. Reviews look good so far but haven't seen many. Still kind of an unknown... I'd bet they work much like a reef octopus skimmer, and you'll get many mixed reviews. I know they aren't sexy but my favorite skimmer, that I have actually owned, is the asm. I currently have a bubbleking, awesome skimmer, but would be pretty ****ed if I paid full retail for.

Hard to beat a ASM. The bubble mixture, reaction time and calm-ness of the bubbles in the neck are very good IMO. Hard to beat for any price, but especially for the price.

I agree with this 100 percent. I've owned two g3s and a g4 and both skim like a beast. You can usually pick up used g3s for around $100. Can't beat it for the price!
