Had a serious Nitrate spike that ihave attributed to disgusting bio balls. Went to remove them to clean them and I have some serious pinapple sponges gorwing in there. LOL.

Rather than deal with all that as I know sponges can become toxic if removed from water and all that jazz Id rather just replace whats there and allow these to dry out and clean up for later use.

Anyone have any bio balls laying around there looking to get rid of?

Or any pointers on how to correctly clean these ones which are infested with sponges.

You should not ever take all the bioballs at once because that's where your beneficial bacteria is. You should be taking out a handful every day or two.

You could replace the bio balls with live rock... I've heard that works really well.

Thats simply not an option here, I can seed new bio balls no problem, the current ones are a nitrate factory and need to go.

I've used a light pressure wash on mine with some vinegar and cleaned up nice.
