Wasn't/isn't a masc event. Probably no sign in sheet.

Event, most certainly..... but not a MASC/SCMAS/DARC sponsored event. Having said that though... would have been nice to see folks from the clubs at a table passing out info.... one was available, just didn't get used.

Maybe next year all 3 clubs can be represented to attract more members for their club.
By the way Rob awesome job on the raffle...thanks to you and the rest of the people that did the raffle.

I'll work on that for next year.... the challenge would be to make sure that there were a couple of volunteers willing to stay at a table throughout the event, albeit in shifts. With over 700 folks walking through the door, I would say that fewer than 1/3 were familiar with any of the local clubs.

The raffle is always interesting.... but also lots of work. Couldn't do it without the kids (and young adults) that volunteer their time. Congrats to the winners... and better luck next year to those who played but didn't walk away with something. Remember... it's supposed to be fun. :)

We have a tendency to forget that most folks who keep reef tanks aren't involved in the local clubs. There aren't enough active club members to keep one LFS alive, let alone a dozen in the metro area. We have a very active group of critter keepers, but we actually represent a small (some might venture 'crazed') section of the market.

We pull folks from the fliers at LFS, Craigslist, word of mouth, vendor advertisements, magazine ads and other sources.... such as ReefBuilders.com and FB.

Yep... we depend on the local club community.... but I would venture that I had never seen 1/4 of the folks who showed up, if not more. I'd lay odds that if you randomly approached someone, half of them could name one of the clubs, but most of them couldn't tell you when the last or next meeting was.

And don't get me wrong.... it's not a complaint or a negative... it's just the market. Lot's of folks have aquariums, but few of them actually join a club. Of those who join a club, even fewer of them are active on a regular basis.

Ask your favorite LFS how many of their customers are active members of a club... you might be surprised at their answer.

I'd bet 10% of local people are active in one of the clubs. Some have even been involved and got tired of the bs that tends to follow them.

i suppose you are right ...all the more reason for us all to unite (in some form) and get us a MACNA!

but not everyone that has a tank is really a true hobbyist ...like us geeks :) they just want the "prestige" and let someone else take care of it
