Hey wait a minute...I got my halimeda from your tank Cindy! Rabble rabble rabble !!!

Lol...hopefully people recognize that hitchhikers can and will come from anything we add to the tank, no matter when we might notice them. It's a risk we all take...and nobody ever dips macros (that I know of), so it's a matter of weighing benefits vs potential risks.

I think Alan's recent experience with my macro is a perfect example of how to handle the situation...handle it on your end, then be courteous and let the other person know that they might have pests. I was completely unaware and now have a reason to comb through my fuge and handle the issue.

Bashing generous people in this hobby and our community is no way to go about doing things. We all have a choice in who we get our livestock from...choose wisely, but no need to blame someone when you get an uninvited guest in your tank.

Just to be clear...no I don't think the aiptasia came from Cindy's tank. I seeded my tank with live rock from my previous cube to start the cycle. That tank had aiptasia at one point...I scrubbed the rock and then tossed it in the tank when ammonia spiked at 2ppm...no light was over the fuge for 3 months. It took almost 6 months for that pest to show up...this stuff happens.

I would just add to Jahmic's advice to "then be courteous and let the other person know that they might have pests" via private methods.

I had an incident a few months back where I was just attempting to confirm to someone that the item given did indeed have some unwanted stuff on it. He warned me when he gave it to me so he was entirely upfront, and it was a DBTC that was going to other people. I just wanted to make sure to confirm so the other recipients were sure to dip as well, but my post should have been better worded. It could easily have been read that it was a total surprise to me that the pests were there. Just that small error caused some issues, and that is why I say make the communication in private.

Now that is funny. I didn't even think to make that connection.

On a related note. (Cindy) Being that I already have some of your critters, can I be grandfathered in and still get some brittle stars from you.

Cindy, it's out now so you can stop pretending you're not trying to sabotage us all in your terrorist plot to have the nicest tank lol. I've figured you out. And now I'm bummed because I've been looking forward to the day I could out you myself. And following the chaeto thread so I could grab some next time you were feeling generous. And I of course was going to dip it in kerosene first. Just kidding. You're included in the list of members I would gladly take anything from any day. Anyone who is worried about critters they dont know how to identify should dip! I would loooove to have stomatella and abilone and aptasia. My filefish is hungry anyway lol. He's starting to resort to frogspawn, hammers and anthelia as nourishment.

Should there ever be a Nuclear Holocaust, the one thing that we can assured of is that aiptasia will flourish by developing a taste for ****roaches.

Folks need to practice Safe Reefing, and even the best cared for tanks have unwanted critters every now and then. It's a shame that the ****ing and moaning of one leads to the end of generosity for all. There's a reason that QT tanks exist, and it may come as a shock.... they aren't meant just for fish!

Hey everyone.

It was me who approached Cindy about what I thought may be some flatworms I was noticing in my own Chaeto. I had been graciously given the Chaeto from Cindy/Mike back in December whenever I was first starting my tank.

When picking up the Chaeto, Mike had mentioned that they had previously given some out and people had claimed they saw something that looked like flatworms, and he assured me that they were snails and that wasn't the case.

When I noticed what I thought could be some of these imposter flatworms in the Chaeto that had been sitting in my tank for about a month(I had added 3 corals since then), I thought "I should go ask Cindy/Mike if she had seen these before". I hopped on the forum here and she was sitting in chat, so I started firing away with questions and pictures. I was looking for a quick answer, and didn't think through the fact that my questions could be interpreted as accusations. This was not my intent, but all that matters is that it came across this way over chat.

First - I want to formally apologize to Cindy and Mike. If I had spent a few more minutes thinking about it, I would have thought to PM and ask through that avenue, which would have been the right thing to do. All I did by using the chat function was socially disrespect Cindy and Mike for an act they DID NOT have to do, especially for free. I made a mistake and I will acknowledge that in front of everyone, even though Cindy was nice enough to not mention me in her post.

Second - I am sorry to anyone else to whom I have inadvertently affected. Their Chaeto is truly good stuff and I have deprived a few of you from getting the same benefit from it that I received. My apologies to you as well.

This community has been great to me since I started posting here, so for me to not do my part would be unacceptable. I will willingly take any flack from this, as it is deserved.

-Dean

Wow I think this is a first, not only stepping up for your actions but giving a formal and thorough response, like Chad said bravo.

Add my thanks and kudos to those above. Like Mike said, I can't improve on the other comments very much.
I am truly impressed at the response, and extremely appreciative that you are willing to step up in such a big way both publicly and privately. That means a great deal. For what it's worth, I never thought your actions/words were intended to cause harm. As you said, I think they were simply not thought out. Hopefully my post was clear about that. (It may not have been, as I've been known to speak hastily on occasion, and quick words are not usually clear.)

:bravo:  :bowing:
