in a 40 gal breeder with a 10gal sump which is the best heater setup?
1. One Via Aqua 300watt Titanium heater (older version without the digital readout)
2. Two Eheim Jager TruTemp 100w heaters

I bought the new 2 Jagers for a back up and so i could clean some algae and precipitate off of my Via Aqua. But know i am wondering if i should just keep the Via Aqua as the back up?
What do u think?

I personally prefer having a bunch of smaller heaters to heat the tank instead of one large one. I know that if one of my heaters fails, it wont kill everything in the tank. If it fails and wont turn on, the heat doesnt drop too dramatically to kill everything. And if i fails and gets stuck on, its not enough power to heat the tank up and kill everything.

I was thinking that too. Think im gonna stay with the two Jagers. I have another question.
How would you place two heaters in the sump? Would you put them next to each other in the same chamber or in different chambers? I think that if you had one too far down stream from the other, it may not kick on at all because the first one would be doing all the work.

I would argue a faulty 100w will kill everything just like a 300w will in terms of remaining on and cooking everything. I would also argue that 2 heaters is 2x the probability of failure.

No way, "argue"......? Other then bash the statement do you have any incite on this other then, what "you" think is wrong. Like would you use Sterno to heat the tank? Or when or if you where faced with this conundrum, "you" would.....? Use matches? Dude seriously.... That would take a lot of matches.

I use 2 undersized heaters with a reefkeeper controlling them.
Thats what im doing!! Since i started using the two Jagers my temp has been steady at 79 and hasent budged in hours. Def a good change. My tank would fluctuate like a full degree with the Via Aqua.

a 100w stuck on would not be enough to heat to get 50gallons of water up to 85. Yes, It is 2x the failure, but if you have 1 heater, the chance of failure is still the same. With only 1 heater, the failure is 100% guaranteed to be catastrophic.

I also use an Apex to make sure its shut off, which I think is the safest route. The temp sensor's on heaters is terrible.
